OAKLEY and Over the Hump are recognizing a man that inspires. We are proud to present Sean Smith the final 2011 OAKLEY Jupiter Award.

This Jupiter Award Winner exemplifies change, as he once rode and raced for his own glory and pleasure. He put cycling and training before a lot of other things including, at times, his family. While he’s always been a great husband and dad, it wasn’t until just a few years ago that he changed his focus.

He runs the team side of the Linked Cycling Team and continues to find ways to meet, help, and ride with riders of all abilities.

Sean Smith Plots out the Kids Race course June 28 (photo courtesy Steve Shambeck PLS Photography)

Sean Smith’s persistence & dedication in organizing the OTH Kid’s Race every week is a perfect example of his selfless attitude in serving his community.

Last year Sean came to us, and said, “Our team would like to help volunteer with the kids’ race, it’s important, and we love seeing what the kids’ race is doing to get people excited about racing”.

Sean’s initiation turned into this year’s reality of the WEEKLY Kid’s Race. Because of Sean and Linked, the kid’s race is not just an Over the Hump novelty, it’s where most of our parents come out more jazzed about what their kid gets to do on the bike that night, than the main event where they are racing themselves. And at 5:30pm each week this summer the Kids Race has been the MAIN EVENT.

Sean would tell you this is not an award he deserves or wants. That it’s been a privilege to serve and be a part of the Over the Hump community, watching others thrive and succeed. That he loves the race, and the people there, and is proud to be a part.

And we might have let that slide, until Sean raised the bar for community, service and personal character.

Sean Smith, from Linked Cycling who was competing the first half of the season, June 21 in the Expert group sacrificed his race. A rider had gone down in crucial corner, with tons of traffic and was lying in the middle of the course. Sean abandoned his bike, and the race, to help support the downed rider who severely broke his ankle. Sean helped Ryan get off the course, before a pack of riders came upon him. He then left his bike behind and helped Ryan into our race support Kawasaki Mule and took the rider to a place where medics could assist him. All the time comforting the injured rider, holding his ankle, and preventing further injury.

Thank you to Linked for running our kids race this season, Sean

OAKLEY and Over the Hump are recognizing a man that inspires. And in this case, the one who might “want it least” exemplifies the spirit of the OAKLEY Jupiter Award. A man who rode for himself, now riding for and with others.

We are proud to present Sean Smith the final 2011 OAKLEY Jupiter Award.

Cannondale called me and asked me if I wanted to come out again as a part of the American Interbanc Cannondale team, and demo the 2011 Cannondale Flash 29er.

Growing up on two wheels has been my life since the age of 3 ½, whether racing motocross or riding my BMX bike in the fields around my family’s North County home. The natural progression of the sport had me to chasing my dreams to become a pro motocross racer.

Michael Sleeter in action!

I raced professional for just over 11 years. This is my first year not racing full time, so focusing on training is a little more difficult without MX racing events to hold me accountable. For those of you that have not raced, motocross racing is one of the most physical demanding sports in the world, so to replicate anaerobic threshold in a competitive environment is nearly impossible unless you are riding a MTB.

I purchased my first mountain bike in 1999 and have always had one since. A lot of MX guys use a road bike to train as they feel they can control their heart rate better, but when it comes down to hard anaerobic training there is nothing as good as riding in the dirt on your MTB if you are Motocross racer.

I heard about The Over the Hump series 2 years ago from champion motocross riders Johnny Omara and Ivan Tedesco. They had always tried to get me out there but coming from Murrieta it was quite a drive to go “suffer”. In early June I finally made it out to my First Over the Hump event and was hooked. The environment, camaraderie, and fun course made me itch to come back.

My first race was aboard my 2009 Cannondale Rush (which I absolutely love). I won the sport division by only seconds in that first race and was excited to come back, but nervous as well since there was an expectation to do well now.

A couple weeks ago Cannondale called me and asked me if I wanted to come out again as a part of the American Interbanc Cannondale team, and demo the 2011 Cannondale Flash 29er. I was a little Nervous to switch bikes, but the moment I put my leg over the bike I couldn’t believe how comfortable it was. As I raced to the finish in only my second race in the Sport Division I was greeted with a 2:30 minute lead over second place.

I can only attribute the difference to the performance of the new Cannondale 29er Flash. The balance, speed and overall weight is unmatched in my opinion when it comes to hard trail race bikes.

I’m absolutely hooked on the event and I’m saving my pennies to make sure I can make a full time showing at next year’s series on a Cannondale Flash 29er. I feel that if I want to compete in the Super Sport class in the 2012 Over the Hump Series that I will need a killer bike.

OTH it is one of the most competitive MTB race series around, and I love that it is welcoming to all ages and levels.

**OTH Note: “Welcome to Super Sport Mike!”**

We believe in doing, so does the race club from crankbrothers! Crankbrothers makes beauty while living the adventure themselves. It’s in their DNA!

Feeling the roll of butterflies in your stomach, reminds you that you’re alive. Like right before rolling your mountain bike, into a big drop that you know will be fun and a little hairy….but the payoff would be nothing without the butterflies. That’s beauty, taking a risk, making something worth watching… making a story worth living, where some love to watch, and the heros are bold enough to go do it themselves. Grassroots starts in the belly, with the butterflies.

We believe in doing, that’s what Over the Hump is all about; so we’re pumped to introduce the race club from crankbrothers! Crankbrothers makes beauty while living the adventure themselves. It’s in their DNA!

This week, for the first time ever, anywhere, you’ll be able to view, try, and buy the race club kit and gear only at the crankbrothers booth at Over the Hump, Tuesday, August 16. And with anything worth having, or an adventure well lived, there’s a story behind it.

It all started in the Laguna Beach, CA, design studio, the crankbrothers team share their love for two things – bicycles and design.

Crankbrothers has created a new style of World Cup racing team, called The Race Club. This new program was introduced this year at the Sea Otter Classic in Monterey, CA.

The race club is two things a World Cup caliber racing program and an exhibit of crankbrothers love for simple, classic design.

The vision for the race club is an inclusive racing organization linking their program partners with riders, racers, passionate fans, and enthusiasts through their love of speed, design, and beauty. Crankbrothers prides itself on its simplicity, style, design, aesthetic, and love for classic beauty.

The Pro Rider!

Amy Dombroski is the first club rider. Already accomplished globally in cyclocross, she will also have a full World Cup schedule in xc, short track, and marathon. Amy made her her race club debut in short track and xc at Sea Otter May 2011.

Amy Dombroski the race club pro racer tearing up Sea Otter Classic

Amy’s as excited about the race club as Crankbrothers is. With Cyclocross World Championships hitting the US in 2013, it was Amy’s goal to set the stage in preparation for Worlds. In searching for the perfect sponsor (after racing for Luna) Amy said, “I wanted a sponsor who would let me do what I want in cool clothing and the best equipment; all while I’m flying all over the world…not easy. But crankbrothers had this idea itching to spring to life, an off-road team, women (because what is more beautiful than a woman on a bike)” Amy’s words “…racing at the highest level; parallel with crankbrothers’ underlying love – bicycles and design. We recognized a common vision of racing at a high level while keeping it simple but different.”

Talking with Dombroski is like looking at a rainbow, and taking in its metaphors and energy. She summed up The Race Club current and future, from her vantage point. “We started small and simple in our inaugural season. It all started with detailed design, a solid foundation of colors, theme and passion which is where the race club kits blossomed from. I am excited for the growth race club is on the cusp of, and to share that with all who want to be involved. Seeing others in these race club kits is eye candy and to have others involved in the process is sweeter than any outcome.”

You can be a part of Race Club!

Aside from being a pro race team, the race club is actually something that anybody can be a part of as a fan. Men and Women.

The girls of OTH Maxine, Aimee, and Amanda

Amanda Schaper at crankbrothers shared with us the vision of race club, that’s unique to pro cycling “Something we feel is lacking in the current professional cycling scene–true fans and supporters. Football has them, so why not mountain biking? With the race club, we hope to create a program that people want to be a part of. Our racers are super fun and approachable. And at races and events, the race club tent will be a place that we welcome people to hang out at. Eventually, we hope to form a grassroots race club program with the same spirit as the pro team, and it makes sense that we’d start that program right here in Orange County.”

At the Over the Hump race on August 9, some of the ladies of crankbrothers debuted the new race club kits. Next week, even more of the crankbrothers crew will be out racing in the race club colors.

The gear is here!

Schaper announced the launch of the kits this week, “August 9 the race club kits will be available for sale for the first time ever at the race. The kits are different than what the pro team wears in their races, but we wanted to create something that would let fans fly the race club flag. We have specific cuts available for men and women, and the Hincapie kits are fantastic quality.”

So be a part of something great & beautiful. Visit the Crankbrothers booth this week.

Tuesday, June 28, 2011 Over the Hump was proud to introduce the first ever Oakley Jupiter Award, given to the rider who most inspires fellow Humpers!

The award will be passed twice annually, and bear the recipient’s name, and represent their story to inspire us all.

The first honoree is our own # 426, Beginner4(50+ rider) Mr. Scott Burrows!!!

Racing mountain bikes to our Jupiter Award winner is a big deal. At press he’s 5th in the Beginner 4 Class for the 12 week Over the Hump Summer Series.

Scott finished 6 months of relentless chemo last April. He was down 25 lbs at the end of of it all and didn’t have the strength to put on his socks or take the lid off a water bottle. Couldn’t drive, walk his dog, shop, empty or load the dishwasher, work or put on a shirt by himself. Many times Scott just stayed in bed until morning so that someone could help him get up.

Scott was diagnosed with metatastic melanoma, a large tumor on his left lung. It was his second time with metatastic cancer – the first was 1994.

The cancer was discovered after he became out of breath while riding and couldn’t understand why he felt so out of air. That led to scans and eventually two oncologists telling him not to expect to live.

That journey began in September of 2009. And it followed brain surgery, just 4 months before, to remove a brain tumor not related to the cancer. That tumor was not cancerous, but the surgery caused him to lose his balance nerve and hearing in his left ear. He had to re-learn to walk, let alone ride a bike. But he got back on the bike a month later (road only) and two months later he was on his mountain bike. No more wheelchair or cane. Life was good! Then he found out he had cancer, and things went downhill pretty fast.

He finished chemo April 6, 2010. His body was wrecked, but the cancer was gone. HE could hardly wait to ride again. But didn’t have the strength to balance on a bike, or put weight on his handle bars. His friend Tim walked along his bike and held him as he learned to ride around the driveway just like a 4 year old getting on a bike for the first time.

That was June 2010. After that it was a ride to the stoplight and back. Then eventually Newport Coast (he had to stop 3 times and rest). And slowly his strength and weight came back. Eventually He was back on his mountain bike and riding his old rides again.

The big test was “I Think I Can in El Morro”. To ride that trail was a victory. He used to race up it. This time it was just to finish. He did it. Now he has the 7th best time on Strava.com last he checked.

Matt Wenger (left), John Russell (right), present Scott Burrows with the Oakley Jupiter Award

He’s back…self admittedly he’s not the strongest racer. Scott says he’s strong enough. Riding is a victory. Racing is the Cherry on top.

When we asked Scott what he had to say about his journey, Scott Said, “Just racing is victory enough for me. And I thank God that I can just come out and compete with everyone. That’s a blessing enough to me. And hopefully an inspiration to others who face challenges they never expected – or wondered if they would survive.”

The Oakley Jupiter Award allows us to celebrate victory over challenges, monumental people and personalities. It’s a good reminder of life lived to the full, within our local riding community. We’re proud to honor Scott Burrows as a man who embodies what Over the Hump and the Oakley Jupiter Award is all about.
